After-Care For Wisdom Teeth Removal

Posted .

Wisdom teeth need to be removed to protect your oral health. However, you need to continue protecting your oral health afterwards by following the after-care instructions your dentist will give you. These instructions may include some of the following mandates:

  • You should rest for a few days after the procedure. Strenuous activities can increase blood pressure which may dislodge the blood clot on the extraction site (which helps to protect and heal the area).
  • Avoiding spitting and using a straw for a day or two after the procedure because these can also dislodge the blood clot.
  • Avoid tobacco and alcohol use. These two substances are not only bad for overall health, but they irritate oral tissue and can slow the healing process.
  • To relieve pain and swelling, you can take pain killers and also apply a cold compress to your face.
  • Drink a lot of water after the surgery. Avoid drinks which can dry out or irritate the mouth such as those which are hot, carbonated, alcoholic, or caffeinated.
  • Only eat soft foods for the first 24 hours after the surgery and semisoft foods after that if you are able. Avoid foods that are chewy, hard, hot, or spicy.
  • Don’t brush your teeth for at least 24 hours after the surgery. You can begin brushing very gently after this time and cleaning your mouth with a salt water rinse.
