As a member of the American Dental Association, Dr. Brough joins hundreds of other dentists in making an extra effort to education children and parents on the importance of dental health. Dr. Brough emphasizes the following oral hygiene habits to maintain good dental health.
- Brush 2 times each day. The most important time to brush is at night before you go to bed.
- Floss at least 1 time each day. Brushing gets most of the plaque off, but the plaque that hides between the teeth also needs to be removed.
- For children under 5 years old, parents should brush their children’s teeth before bed. Some older children may still need help. Have the child stand or sit in front of the mirror so they can see what it looks like when they brush their own teeth.
- Avoid sugary drinks. Bacteria in plaque feeds on the sugar left on teeth and secretes acid. The acid eats away at the protective enamel causing cavities.
- Visit your dentist every 6 months to make sure there is no decay or that problems can be detected early and taken care of before they become a big.
Following these guidelines will help you have beautiful, healthy teeth.
