Most adults don't properly care for their teeth. A person should brush at least twice daily for a period of two minutes using a soft or extra soft brush. Floss at least once daily. The bristles of the toothbrush should clean all tooth surfaces. The brush should contact the teeth at a 45-degree angle in order to clean along the gum line. Brushing too hard can damage surfaces on the root and the enamel.
Very few people floss, even though it's just as important as brushing. The string of floss should be gently curved around the side of each tooth and gently slid down the side of the tooth being careful not to snap the gum.
Everyone should have their teeth professionally cleaned twice a year. The environment in the mouth calcifies plaque into tartar. This tartar can't be brushed or flossed off.
Tartar can cause gum disease and in severe cases could lead to tooth loss. Since gum disease is painless, your gums should be checked often. Our office has two licensed hygienists. They can help you keep your teeth forever.
