Crowns, also known as caps, are simply coverings for teeth. They're designed to restore severely broken teeth, to strengthen weak teeth (such as back teeth with root canals), or to change a bite. There are many different crown types available today. They all have pros and cons. You should select the crown that's best for you.

P.F.M. (Porcelain Fused to Metal)    These are the most popular crowns. They've been around for a long time. P.F.M.s are very strong and they're colored to match your teeth. Among their drawbacks; the metal structure under the porcelain can make the crown appear chalky. It can also make gums look blue. Some patients may be allergic to the metal.

Crown Types:

ALL PORCELAIN    These are relatively new. When they first came out, they were prone to fracturing, so dentists went back to traditional crowns. Thanks to recent technological innovations, porcelain crowns are now reliable. They're the most natural looking crown! With no metal structure inside, porcelain crowns don't have the problems associated with P.F.M.s. Among their drawbacks; they can still fracture. They also have to be bonded to the tooth.

FULL GOLD     These are the oldest and the most durable, long-lasting crowns. The obvious drawback is they don't look natural. They're bright and shiny.

PRESSED RESIN     These are new, but show promise. They're made from a polymer pressed into the shape of the crown. Among their drawbacks; they can wear down. They're also relatively new. They haven't been tested by time.
